As we celebrate the last few weeks of summer and reflect on the seductively oppressive heat, the humidity which inspires revealing fashions, and the glamour of a tom collins in a sweating highball, on rattan table top, on a porch lined with grand ferns; it is the glorious ceiling fan twisting slowly overhead, the catches our attention.

Finding a tasteful ceiling fan has proven to be one of the most
challenging interior-decorating task we've encountered to date. Our
travels took us back to the first decades of the last century. Back to
the birth of the ceiling fan, when companies like Diehl were designing
simple, elegant, soon-to-be classics.

The ceiling fan design hasn't been updated since it's origin, aside
from a few tangents into the world of the ridiculous. Regrettably
these accessories of modern comfort have been watered down into
the design-addled lock-step of Home Depot-ritz. A crushing middle of the
road that has taken over accessible accessories in general. It may be a subtle difference, but it is all in the craft and elegance.

The originals are out there. Finding them isn't easy and they don't
come cheap. We turned to Vintage Fans.com who finds and restores turn of the
century ceiling fans.

A restored fan like this beautiful number from 1918 will cost approximately $3600.00

"The Wolseley was created by Chris Corbin and Jeremy King in 2003 in the style of the Grand Café normally only found on the Continent. The original building was commissioned in 1921 by Wolseley Cars as their West End showroom and was designed by William Curtis Green in the Art Deco style of the time. In keeping with the Grand Cafe tradtion and to match the opulence of the interior, a range of equipment inspired by the era was sourced, some antique and others bespoke."

The Wolseley has started a web store to sell selections of their exceedingly popular table and glassware. The Black & White Cake Stand with Cloche is £165.00.

The doc is a very candid and unique peek behind the curtain at Jacob's
remarkable hands-on involvement with every aspect of both lines. Though
the doc claims that Jacob's doesn't drink or do drugs, he did find his
way into rehab in March 2007, six months after the cameras rolled. So,
one wonders if this is a portrait of a man on the edge, working insane
hours in an insane business, teetering on the edge of relapse, or if
the man we see on screen is simply the mad genius of the fashion world
with edge that propels season after season though provoking lines.

The documentary is currently airing on Sundance Channel. Check the site for listings.
